Evergreen Memorial Gardens Cemetery Funeral Chapel and Crematory, started in the early 1950s, when a man named Anderson, out of Texas, began purchasing land in smaller communities in the Western United States. Mr. Anderson was experienced in developing cemeteries and intended on establishing a network of them in the smaller cities around the West. He acquired 40 acres in the quiet city of Vancouver, Washington and went about the creation of Evergreen Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Funeral Chapel and Crematory.
Within a few short years the Waterhouse family, with interests in the lumber industry in Oregon, acquired the cemetery and began to expand on what Anderson had started.
In 1968, Willard J. Carlson, of Spokane, Washington, was hired by the Waterhouse family as minority partner to manage, promote and further develop the cemetery. He had previous experience as General Manager of two large cemeteries in the Spokane area. Carlson relocated his family to pursue a dream. A dream of providing him, his wife and their children a business they could call their own. Within a few years the Waterhouse family sold the remaining interest to Mr. Carlson.
In 1974 a full service funeral chapel was built and added to the cemetery operation, thereby creating a unique combination of the two together on one property. This helped to provide convenience, comfort and unparallel service to the Clark County families at a lower cost. Evergreen Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Funeral Chapel and Crematory continues to be Clark County's only combination cemetery and funeral chapel.
