The cemetery's official name is Rawlins Cemetery.
The following information is courtesy of a local historian, Rans Baker:
Rawlins has had four burying grounds but only one, the current one, became the Official Cemetery.
From 1867 into the 20th Century, records, if any concerning burials were the province of families, churches and from the latter 1880's into the 1920's that of the Rawlins Cemetery Association. This was a private organization made up at different times of at least four or five prominent citizens. Through the years, however, its principal members were Frank Blake and Henry Rasmusson. Both men and their families were members of St. Joseph's Catholic Church (this will be important as you will see in a moment). The Association itself was instrumental in establishing the current Cemetery. Now among his various enterprises, Association Treasurer Henry Rasmusson became an undertaker in 1887. He did keep records of his burials and as Association Treasurer, kept records and sold plots to individual families who then buried their own dead or when available, used another undertaker. Henry did not keep records of such burials. Yet, it is his limited Cemetery Records that are the basis of the ones kept by the City of Rawlins today. Rasmusson's and Blake's affiliation with St. Joseph's Catholic Church undoubtedly made it possible for the church to develop the largest Special Section in today's Cemetery. The only name we have for the entire Cemetery through the years is the Rawlins Cemetery, the one the Association used.
St Joseph's is a part of that Cemetery...The Association itself is long gone and it has only been since the 1990's that St. Joseph began sharing its burial records with the City. In short, the City of Rawlins is the best source for information concerning any transfers of Cemetery property, the acreage, the funding methods, the rules or "general overview" of our current burying ground.
The archway on one of the entrances to Rawlins Cemetery mentions "St Joseph's Cemetery" is only for the St Joseph's section of the entire cemetery, but that "Rawlins Cemetery" is the official name of the entire cemetery and the City of Rawlins municipal government's Public Works Division are in charge of the grounds, installation of markers and interments.
