Caroline (Carrie) Suzanne Graber (Nusz), 90, of Freeman passed away on April 19, 2014, at Oakview Terrace Nursing Home, Freeman, SD.
Caroline was welcomed into the family of F. August and Martha (Ulmer) Nusz on November 12, 1923 in rural Menno, SD. She was the fourth of seven children – Andrew, Sam, Dolorzie, Julie, Rumie and Marie. As a young woman Caroline had goals, but first she had to convince her father that females should go to high school and she proved her point by graduating as the valedictorian of her class. She aspired to be a nurse but was just 17 when she graduated from Menno High School and Mount Marty College would not accept students under 18, so she went to Freeman Junior College for a year where she met Peter J. Graber. She taught school for a year and then Pete and she were wed in May of 1945.
Carrie and Pete spent 67 years together working side by side on the farm until Pete passed in June of 2012. Mother would reminisce at times regarding the early years of their marriage – not being from the community, not being raised Mennonite and the hard physical work involved with farming and raising a family, but she was a strong soul and handled the changes well becoming an active community worker and devout member of the Salem-Zion Mennonite Church.
They brought four children into the world – Patricia (Don, deceased) Gross, Madison, SD; Steve (Linda), Freeman, SD; Beth (Monte) McIntyre, Hill City, SD; Amy (Kevin) McNabb, Shoreview, MN. She shared her life with 10 grandchildren as well – Marc Gross, deceased (Jennifer Gross Nash); Jennifer (Jason) Maxwell; Matthew Gross; Polly (Kyle) Waltner; Lacey (Lance) Friesen; Daniel (Tina) Graber; Jonathan Graber; Carrie McIntyre; Pete McNabb; Cate McNabb, and 7 great grandchildren.
Carrie, as she became known in the Freeman community, was active in church choirs sharing her strong, clear soprano voice and in a women’s trio with Welma Waltner and Eda Kaufman. She was a member of the Merry Homemaker’s Extension Club for many years and an active member of the hospital auxiliary. After the kids were out of the house she worked in the Dietary Dept. of the Freeman Community hospital taking great pride in the meals she prepared for others. Food preparation was always a huge part of her life as her children and grandchildren will always remember her fried potatoes, caramel rolls and abundance of garden produce.
Mother never wanted to be in the limelight and never wanted to be “fussed” over. She was a strong, independent woman who cared about her family and others, as was shown in the number of times she expressed the phrase “Take care.”

Caroline heiratete Graber, Peter J. am 18 Mai 1945. Peter wurde geboren am 17 Aug 1920 in Freeman, Hutchinson County, South Dakota, USA; gestorben am 30 Jun 2012 in Freeman, Hutchinson County, South Dakota, USA; wurde beigesetzt in Salem Zion Mennonite Cemetery, Marion, Turner County, South Dakota, USA. Rumie was born on March 20, 1928, to F. August and Martha (Ulmer) Nusz on their family farm east of Menno, South Dakota.
He was baptized at Ebenezer Reformed Church and confirmed into the Christian faith in 1942 at the Salem Reformed Church in Menno. He attended rural Molan School District through eighth grade and then began working full-time on the family farm.
Rumie entered military service in March of 1951.
He married Verlene Lehr on August 19, 1951 at Fort Bliss, El Paso, Texas, and shipped out to Korea in December that same year. He was promoted to full Sergeant and earned a Bronze Star for his actions during combat ground operations.
After being discharged from the Army, Rumie and Verlene moved to the Nusz family farm where they lived life and raised five children.
He was a man of character and integrity, and loved and served the Lord throughout his life. Always curious, he enjoyed learning and was a serious reader. He also enjoyed “light” reading, with Beetle Bailey being a constant favorite. Although he never had the opportunity to attend high school, he wanted to show his children the importance of education and earned his GED at the age of 48.
Rumie’s family was his priority. Even though there was always work to do, he liked to end the day with a quick family softball game in the yard (using disk blades for bases), some basketball in the hay loft (with a hoop made from rebar), or a competitive game of checkers (with checkers made from sawed pieces of a broom handle). He supported his family in all their endeavors and will be remembered for his love of family, compassionate heart and kind soul.
Rumie Phillip. Nusz, age 88 of Menno, SD passed away Thursday, February 09, 2017 at his home.
Rumie is survived by his five children: Charles, Yankton, SD, David (Gaye), Omaha, NE, Kathy (Ken) Stepanek, Menno, SD, Tim (Maureen) Wyoming, IL, and Lisa (Greg) Larson, Elk Point, SD; their nine grandchildren: Sheridan and Brooks Nusz, Kyle (Loni) and Kaleb (fiancée Rachael Hecht) Stepanek, Alexandra, Levi, and Jacob Nusz, and Lukas and Noah Larson; sister-in-law Stella Nusz; and brother-in-law Elton (Janice) Lehr.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years; his parents; brothers Andrew and Sam Nusz; and sisters Delorzie Fields, Caroline Graber, Juliet Kaufman, and Mariee Nusz.
