Alvin was born March 27, 1906, to Mr. and Mrs. August Bauer. He lived in Grant County all his life. He was born and raised on a farm north of Heil and attended a rural school then Heil grade school. He worked with his father on the home place and also in the coal mines near New Leipzig and Zap.
Alvin married Lillian Sandau on July 09, 1933, at New Leipzig. Lillian is a daughter of Fred (deceased) and Julia Bierwagon Sandau. Mrs. Sandau will be 91 in August and is living in Newberg, Oregon. After getting married the Bauers moved to a farm near Carson; moving from there in 1936 to a farm north of New Leipzig and then back to Heil on the homestead in 1947.
Alvin retired from the farm in 1957. He went to work for a construction company near Fargo/Moorhead for a few years. During the winter, he, Lillian and Dave would return to the farm. When he quit the construction business he went to work for some farmers until he suffered a stroke in 1980. In August of 1983 the Bauers sold their farm to their son and moved to New Leipzig.
Three children were born to this union: Diana (John) Callinan of Yorba Linda, California; Doris (Marvin) Schaible of Kirkland, Washington; and Dave of Elgin.Alvin heiratete Sandau, Leah am 9 Jul 1933.
