Mrs. Katharina Ziegenhagel Leaves this Life
The Lord of life and death has, in his wise providence, been pleased to call Mrs. Kathariina Ziegenhagel, wife of Mr. Friedrich Ziegenhagel from this life into eternity.
Mrs. Ziegenhagel saw the light of this world on 21 Sep 1867 in Kassel, South Russia. She was a daughter of Mr. Ludwig Hoff and his wife Katharina nee Hieb. As a 12 year old girl, she immigrated with her parents to Tyndall, South Dakota. The family lived here for 5 years, after which the Hoff family moved to the region of Eureka, South Dakota. Here she got to know her now grieving husband. As a 19 year old virgin, she entered into marriage on the 24«sup»th«/sup» May 1886. This marriage was blessed with 9 children, of which 3 children preceded their mother in death and six children: Jakob, Arthur, David, Alma, Ida and Robert mourn with their father the passing of the mother. Shortly after the wedding, the Ziegenhagel pair came to the Lehr region, where they then also recorded their homestead. Here they lived all these years and shared with one another 50 years of joy and sorrow. On the 24«sup»th«/sup» May 1936, it was the rare privilege of the children to celebrate with their parents, their Golden Wedding Anniversary. No one then had any idea that Mother Ziegenhagel would lie in the coffin so soon after such a lovely celebration. The Lord's ways are not our ways.
Mother Ziegenhagel was a faithful wife and a loving mother to her children. She was always concerned about her children, that things would go well for them. She prayed often to the Lord for her dear family. She became a believer in the Lord in 1888 and since then, has been a zealous follower of her Saviour. In the same year, she became a member of the Evangelical Church and for 48 years, she shared joy and sorrow with this church. Still, one year ago, she resigned from the church due to circumstances. She loved truth and tranquility (peace). She had many friends, not only in the church group, but also outside of the church. She did what she could. Nothing was too much in the service of her Master. In everything she saw God's hand and glory. How she rejoiced in the splendor (beauty, glory) of the Lord, which manifested itself in flowers and nature. She was a great lover of flowers. Tirelessly, she tended them. It always pleased her to take the friends that she loved deeply into her flower garden where she loved to linger a long time. She understood the language of flowers well.
On Tuesday morning, the 9«sup»th«/sup» of June, after their morning devotions, Mr. and Mrs. Ziegenhagel started their work as usual. It was a very short time later, while she was doing her household chores, that she was overtaken by a stroke. She was then immediately put to bed. However, the doctor who was summoned, could not help. Without help, and speechless, she lay there and carried her burden with much patience. Everything humanly possible was done to lighten the cross of the wife and mother. On Monday, the 15«sup»th«/sup» of June, at 6 o'clock in the evening, she had a second stroke. From this hour on, the children and their father stayed at the sick- and deathbed of their mother, until her life came to an end on Tuesday morning, the 16«sup»th«/sup» of June. She had now completed her suffering. She is now home with the one that she loved so deeply. Now she sees that which she had believed in this valley of misery. She has only gone on a little while ahead of her loved ones.
On Sunday, the 21«sup»st«/sup» of June, her mortal shell was swept into the grave. A very, very large crowd, probably well over 1000 people, came from far and wide to accompany Mother Ziegenhagel to the grave. The deceased was buried from the Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor J.J. Abel. Pastor G. C. Thiele, Ellendale, a friend of the family delivered a sermon and spoke words of comfort to those left behind. Pastor J.J. Abel gave a sermon on Psalm 62:2. Besides the two mentioned pastors, the following pastors also took part in the funeral service: A. Gunther, Venturia; F. Fischer, Napoleon, V. W. Krentz, Wishek. Mother Ziegenhagel reached the age of 68 years, 9 months, 4 days.
Besides her husband and the 6 children, she is mourned by 10 grandchildren, three sisters; Mrs. Wm. Moore, Hosmer, SD; Mrs. George Hieb, Twin Falls, Idaho, and Mrs. Johann Rudolph, Napoleon; brothers: Ludwig in Lodi, California, Valentin in Washington, Friedrich in Los Angeles, Calif. and Daniel in Canada; one half brother, John Hoff and a half sister Mrs. Fred Bollinger, both in Canada and many friends and relatives.
That the departed was held in high regard by her friends is proven by the many, many flowers on the casket.
May the Lord of all comfort be a healing light to those left behind.
