Ashley ist eine Stadt und Kreisstadt des McIntosh County, North Dakota, USA. Bei der Volkszählung 2010 betrug die Einwohnerzahl 749. Ashley wurde 1888 gegründet.
Geschichte:
Ashley wurde nach Minneapolis, St. Paul und Sault Ste. benannt. Marie Railroad-Managerin Ashley Morrow im Jahr 1888. In den frühen 1880er Jahren kam es zu einem großen Zustrom von Einwanderern aus den verschiedenen Ländern West- und Nordeuropas in die Präriestaaten im mittleren Westen der Vereinigten Staaten. Viele dieser Einwanderer sind Deutsche aus Russland. Siedler errichteten ihre Gehöfte am Ufer eines wunderschönen Sees und nannten ihre Gemeinde Hoskins. Wagenkästen wurden umgedreht und als Unterschlupf genutzt, bis Ochsen Holz aus weit entfernten Städten für die Dächer von Rasenhäusern und Scheunen schleppten. 1898 wurde die Soo Line Railroad von Kulm nach Westen über Lehr und schließlich nach Bismarck verlängert. Mit der Einführung der Eisenbahnen entstanden neue Städte und Märkte in der Nähe der Bauernhöfe wurden eröffnet. Mit dem Aufkommen der Eisenbahn beschlossen die Bürger von Hoskins jedoch, ihre Stadt zu übernehmen und sie drei Meilen östlich zu verlegen, wo sie 1888 Ashley gründeten, benannt nach dem Geschäftsführer der Milwaukee Railroad, Ashley Morrow. Wikipedia 2020: Ashley ist eine Kleinstadt im Süden von North Dakota an der Grenze zu South Dakota und gehört zum McIntosh County. Geschichte: Der Ort wurde 1888 nach dem Milwaukee Railroad-Manager Ashley Morrow benannt. Seit damals, mittlerweile mehr als 100 Jahre, hat die Gemeinde stark an ihren deutsch-russischen Wurzeln festgehalten. Sie hat heute etwa 775 Einwohner. Fast alle Einwohner dieser Stadt, sowie der Umgebung haben deutsch-russische Vorfahren. Diese sind aus der Schwarzmeer-Region, insbesondere aus Bessarabien Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts eingewandert. Viele Einwohner, vor allem die ältere Generation, sprechen untereinander noch heute Deutsch mit einem schwäbischen Akzent. Die Stadt liegt inmitten der amerikanischen Prärie unweit des Missouri River. In unmittelbarer Nähe wurde der Film Der mit dem Wolf tanzt gedreht. Ashley ist Verwaltungssitz des McIntosh County, zu dem unter anderem Wishek, Venturia, Cold Lake und Danzig gehören, Letztere (Danzig) inzwischen ein Weiler mit lediglich 3 Einwohnern. Die Umgebung von Ashley ist von Farmen und dem Lake Hoskins (ca. 5 km westlich der Stadt), an dem es ursprünglich gegründet wurde, umgeben. Die örtliche Schule unterrichtet die Klassen Kindergarten bis 12. Klasse. Die Stadt hat mit einer hohen Abwanderung, vor allem der jungen Generation, und der damit verbundenen Überalterung der Bevölkerung zu kämpfen, da jeder zweite Einwohner über 60 Jahre alt ist.
