Paul "Sammy" Samuel Hawbaker, 87, died December 23, 2003 of natural causes at Karen Acres Healthcare Center in Urbandale.
A lifelong resident and prominent retired farm businessman, farming 40 years in Dallas County. Mr. Hawbaker raised and showed purebred spotted Poland china swine at local and regional events and the Iowa State Fair. Mr. Hawbaker was active in Dallas County 4-H, producing Grand and Reserve Champion beef cattle from his own herd on the Silver Stream Farm, west of Dallas Center. He was a salesman for Moorman Feeds and Heneke Sureway Hybrid seed corn. He was an avid rock hound and amateur archeologist, entertaining many youth groups on the subjects. He hosted an Iowa State Plowing Match. Mr. Hawbaker was a member of the Adel Raccoon Valley Sportsman Club, FFO, and local Farmers Co-op. His wide experience with the harvest operations and wonderful way of meeting the public, made him one of the most popular volunteers at Living History Farms, Urbandale, IA andhelped invite the Pope to the farms.
Mr. Hawbaker started farming in 1940 on the Silver Stream Farm with horses and hand milked a herd of cows. The Massey Ferguson (MF) line of farm equipment intrigued Mr. Hawbaker, as he had the first five bottom plow in Dallas County and worked with MF on one of the 25 self-propelled combines harvesting equipment. In his later years Paul renewed a passion for poetry and composed many poems about farm life and life in general. Each Hawbaker reunion was highlighted by his wit in poetry. Mr. Hawbaker was an adventurer with a passion for life. He attended hog and cattle shows, enjoyed fishing, hunting and hunting for mushrooms. He also was compassionate and would drop his daily activities to help others.
Mr. Hawbaker is survived by four children, Myra Ann Hawbaker, Stephen Paul Hawbaker, Suzette Lynn Crees, and Lonnie Dean Hawbaker; 11 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; and a sister, Martha Wingert. He was preceded in death by his mother, Lydia; father, Samuel; two sisters, Mary Keller and Fannie Keller; and two brothers, Adin and Ezra; and grandson, Matthew Jones.
