! 1948 Wishek Book (The Spirit of Wishek )Pg 69 Also the Wishek Diamond Jubilee Book pg 129 Fred J Sayler came to the United States in 1899 at the age of 13 with his parents. They first homesteaded near Artas, SD. At the age of 17 he left home to work for the Soo Line railroad at Braddock, ND, and to the community of Wishek, ND in 1905. After locating in Wishek he went to work for C.H. Suess who was managing the North Star Lumber Co. His salary was thirty dollars per month of which thirteen was paid to Mrs Jennie Hill for room and board. As a result of this first job in the lumber business, Fred became very interested in the business and was soon promoted to Manager. In 1927, Mr Sayler started his own lumber business and shortly thereafter he bought out his competitors. The name of the firm was changed to Sayler Lumber Co. In 1945 he retired from the lumber business with his children taking over the business. After his retirement from the business he started a development project in the city which was the start of several new business places and many new homes. In 1952 he joined together with three of his sons, Walter, Arthur, and Roy to purchase the Security State Bank and served on the board of directors of the bank for 21 years retiring in 1972. Throught his years, Fred has always been active in civic and community affairs. Fred was a charter member of the Congregational church which was organized in 1912. He was treasurer for 24 years, and served as Chairman of the county Welfare board for several years. He also served on the Wishek School Board and as Alderman a number of times and a member of the Local Red Cross Chapter. Fred and Christina had one baby daughter, dying in infancy.
