Caroline (Carrie) Suzanne Graber (Nusz), 90, of Freeman passed away on April 19, 2014, at Oakview Terrace Nursing Home, Freeman, SD.
Caroline was welcomed into the family of F. August and Martha (Ulmer) Nusz on November 12, 1923 in rural Menno, SD. She was the fourth of seven children – Andrew, Sam, Dolorzie, Julie, Rumie and Marie. As a young woman Caroline had goals, but first she had to convince her father that females should go to high school and she proved her point by graduating as the valedictorian of her class. She aspired to be a nurse but was just 17 when she graduated from Menno High School and Mount Marty College would not accept students under 18, so she went to Freeman Junior College for a year where she met Peter J. Graber. She taught school for a year and then Pete and she were wed in May of 1945.
Carrie and Pete spent 67 years together working side by side on the farm until Pete passed in June of 2012. Mother would reminisce at times regarding the early years of their marriage – not being from the community, not being raised Mennonite and the hard physical work involved with farming and raising a family, but she was a strong soul and handled the changes well becoming an active community worker and devout member of the Salem-Zion Mennonite Church.
They brought four children into the world – Patricia (Don, deceased) Gross, Madison, SD; Steve (Linda), Freeman, SD; Beth (Monte) McIntyre, Hill City, SD; Amy (Kevin) McNabb, Shoreview, MN. She shared her life with 10 grandchildren as well – Marc Gross, deceased (Jennifer Gross Nash); Jennifer (Jason) Maxwell; Matthew Gross; Polly (Kyle) Waltner; Lacey (Lance) Friesen; Daniel (Tina) Graber; Jonathan Graber; Carrie McIntyre; Pete McNabb; Cate McNabb, and 7 great grandchildren.
Carrie, as she became known in the Freeman community, was active in church choirs sharing her strong, clear soprano voice and in a women’s trio with Welma Waltner and Eda Kaufman. She was a member of the Merry Homemaker’s Extension Club for many years and an active member of the hospital auxiliary. After the kids were out of the house she worked in the Dietary Dept. of the Freeman Community hospital taking great pride in the meals she prepared for others. Food preparation was always a huge part of her life as her children and grandchildren will always remember her fried potatoes, caramel rolls and abundance of garden produce.
Mother never wanted to be in the limelight and never wanted to be “fussed” over. She was a strong, independent woman who cared about her family and others, as was shown in the number of times she expressed the phrase “Take care.”
