Hazel Fuhrman, 102, of Bowdon and Fessenden, passed away Tuesday, September 16, 2014 at the St. Aloisius nursing home in Harvey.
Hazel Fuhrman, daughter of Jacob and Rosina (Pfaff) Fuhrman, was born July 24, 1912 on her parents farm southwest of Bowdon where she grew up. She received her early education in the Bowdon Public School, graduating in 1931. She then attended Capital Commercial College in Bismarck for a semester before enrolling at Valley City Teachers College where she received her teaching certificate. She taught in rural schools near Sykeston, Arena and later in the Eigenheim School District south of Harvey.
In the early 1940's she retired from teaching and moved to Casselton where she was employed at the Federal Store for many years. In 1959 she returned to the family farm near Bowdon where she cared for her parents. She remained on the farm until November of 1995 when she moved to Fessenden. She had been a resident of the St. Aloisius nursing home since September of 2013.
Hazel was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church in Fessenden.
She is survived by one sister, Sara Rall of Hot Springs, SD; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; 3 sisters, Martha Hawk, Johanna Nilles and her twin sister, Esther McBain; and 5 brothers, Henry, Paul, Albert, Emil and Dan.
Funeral: Saturday, September 20, 2014 at 11:00 a. m. at the First Baptist Church in Fessenden. Visitation: Friday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Nelson Funeral Home in Fessenden. Burial: Fuhrman Family Cemetery south of Bowdon.
