Frieda Griess Wenzlaff, 85, died Friday, December 29, 1989, at her home in Sutton, NE.
Memorial services were held Tuesday, January 2, 1990, at Hope Reformed Church in Sutton with Reverend Maynard Koerner officiating. Special music was provided by her granddaughter, Karen Zinnecker Clift, soloist, accompanied by granddaughter-in-law, Denise Zinnecker. Enid Hansen was the organist who accompanied congregational singing and the quartet of Mildred Griess, Marcia Koerner, Kenneth Kauk and David Kauk. Casket bearers were Donald Zinnecker, Ronald Brockhaus, Douglas Valentine, Wenzlaff, Mike Clift and John Osterman. Honorary bearers were Ruben A. Griess, James Griess, Richard Ochsner and Theodore Griess. Interment was in the Sutton Cemetery with Kohler Mortuary in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Wenzlaff was born 12 miles northeast of Sutton in York County on February 6, 1904 to Adolph and Elizabeth (Pauley) Griess. Baptized in the Emmanuel Reformed Church, she became a member of the Hope Reformed Church when it was organized in 1908 and 1918 publicly confirmed her faith. She remained a member of the Hope Reformed Church throughout her life even during the years she lived away from Sutton.
She attended rural country school and the Sutton High School. She later taught in the same rural country school. She had a life-long love of music and took voice lessons in Hastings, prior to her marriage. She sang recitals at the Baptist Church in Hastings and the old Opera House in Sutton. She was also choir director in her church at one time.
On September 20, 1927, at her parents' country home, she was united in marriage to Theodore Charles Wenzlaff with Rev. R. Kirchhefer officiating. Her husband was in the United States Calvary so they lived at ten different military installations during his career, mainly in the midwest states. Upon her husband's retirement in 1955, they returned to Sutton.
She was also a member of the Germans from Russia Heritage Society, an associate member of the Retired Officers' Association, a member of the State Legislature Women's Auxiliary, the Friendship Club, and a past member of the Sutton's Womens Club and bridge club here in Sutton.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband (Ted), who died June 21, 1988; one sister, Edna Ochsner, and one brother, Ruben A. Griess.
She is survived by her children; one son: William F. Wenzlaff of Wichita, Kansas; two daughters: Mrs. Lewis (Marianne) Zinnecker of Hastings and Mrs. James (Kathleen) Brockhaus of Nebraska City; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
