This is the person (referred to as "Andrew Buxmann, husband of Ruth Gertrude Greb") that my mother (Katherine (Buxman) Wiest, b. 10 March 1909. (RIN 7) has always referred to as her great grandfather--i.e., the father of her grandfather, Georg Peter Buxmann, b. 1838, the latter called "Peter Buxmann" in the family.

ABT 1774 Data from Igor Pleve of Saratov, 29 July, 1996, gives all Buxmanns (written as Buksmann in Russian transliteration) from the colony of Mueller for the censuses of 1834, 12.10.1850, and 23.01.1858. Andreas Buxman (named as "Johann Andreas Buxmann" is shown as 23.5, 39.5, and 47 years old at the 1834, 1850 and 1858 censuses, and his wife is shown as Gertrude. David Schmidt of Martinez, CA, remarked in a letter of 13 August, 1996, that "Volga Germans were usually called by only one of their names (Rufname) and the Rufname was usually the second name (examples: Johann Andreas = Andreas; Georg Peter = Peter)." In a note of 13 August, 1996 David Schmidt notes further that the 1798 census of Mueller shows two sons of Johann Georg Buxman, one named Johannes (age 24 in 1798) and the other, also named Johannes (aged 22 in 1798). Therefore, a tentative judgment is that the older Johannes Buxmann (b. 1774) is the father of the 2 = 3 = 5 sons.
Additional information is from Ezra Buxman of Greeley, Colorado about his father, Henry, and grandfather, Peter, and great grandfather, Andrew (Andreas). Andrew is said to have died at age 67 and 7 weeks later his wife, Gertrude, died.

Gertrude is shown as aged 33 and 40 at the 1850 and 1858 censuses, and as the wife of Johann Andreas Buxmann (aged 23.5, 39.5, and 47 years old at the three censuses named). On 30 March, 1966 Professor Igor Pleve emailed the following: ". . . .the roots of Catherina Helfenbein begin from Johannes Helfenbein, born in 1735 and Susanna, born in 1736. They came to Russia on the ship "Citadel" on 13.09.1766 and settled firstly in the Stephan colony. We can say exactly that this family left the Stephan
colony for another one before 1788 and Catherina herself was born in some other colony. If we can find it out we shall tell you additionally. . . . . Hope that you are alright, Igor and Ljudmila Pleve"
Thus, since Catherina was born in 1844 (1844 - 1735 = 109) it would appear there may be 4-5 generations separating Catherina from the first Helfenbeins to come to Russia.
Additional information from Ezra Buxman of Greeley, Colorado. Katerina Helfenbein with her parents, Fred and ? Helfenbein, moved to the state (province) of Samara, to the village of WiesenmFuller (about 35 miles from the Volga) while they were still young.

Data from Igor Pleve of Saratov University, provided in 1993 in Saratov, shows Johann Georg Buxmann (born 1743 or 1744) as the first Buxmann to enter Russia from Germany after the invitation of the Czaress, Catharina the Great. He was said to be of the Evangelical (Lutheran) faith, and from the village of Reinheim (FUberau) near Darmstadt, and a tailor by trade. Pleve further reports that on August 16, 1767 Johann Georg Buxmann and his wife and brother (Johann Jakob, born in 1753) went [presumably from Saratov where they had been 'processed'] to the colony of MFuller.
Where the marriage between Johann Georg and Anna Maria took place is not known, whether in Germany, enroute to Russia, or in Russia. There is no record of the marriage in Ueberau/Reinheim church records.
Note, according to Ueberau/Reinheim church records, Johann George was abt 22 at entrance to Russia, and his brother (unmarried at the time) was abt 12.

Data from Igor Pleve of Saratov University, given to me in 1993 in Saratov, shows Johann Georg Buxmann (born 1743 or 1744) and his wife, Amma Maria Schmidt, as the first Buxmanns to enter Russia from Germany after the invitation of the Czaress, Catharina the Great. Mrs. Mischewski of Germany reported that George Heinrich Buxmann died in FUberau on Jan 13, 1760.
David Schmidt, reviewing LDS microfilm from FUberau/Reinheim (and also earlier Mrs. Mischweski of Ilbesheim, ermany) reported that an entry that occurs in the Family Register for George Heinrich Buxmann (b. 6 Jan. 1717) of FUberau says: "The widow married Kaspar Axthelm of Klein-Neuhausen (Erfurt) on March 15, 1763. In 1766, Axthelm, a sock weaver from FUberau with 4 stepchildren, took off for Russia in the night with his wife and children, leaving behind many debts, a house and goods. See protokolle pastorale, page 210."
Since neither Axthelm nor his wife, Elizabeth (?) Buxmann [her maiden name is unknown] appear in the records in Russia, according to Pleve, it may be assumed they died enroute. But two sons, Johann Georg (1745) and Johann Jakob (1754) arrived in Kolonie Mueller in 1767, according to Pleve. The oldest son was married.
Who the other two children were is not known; only Johann George (1745) and Johann Jakob (1754) are shown in the Russian data. The birth dates are from Ueberau/Reinheim church records.
