Henry Whalen was John Henry Goreâ„¢s guardian, and it is assumed he was Johnâ„¢s uncle because his mother was a Whalen.Henry and Naomi Whalen appear in the Chancery Court records in 1819 as defendants in the matter of the Estate of Richard Griffie - Griffies Mill, and Henry appears again in 1820 in a Petition to Sell Benjamins Addition.Elections were often held at the house of Henry Whalen in Anne Arundel in 1818-19.
In the 1820 Anne Arundel census, Henryâ„¢s household consisted of 3 boys under 10 (presusmably one of these was John Henry Gore), 3 males 26-45, and one male over 45 (possibly, his father, Stephen); 1 female under 10 and 3 females 26-45; 4 slaves. Three men were engaged in agriculture and one in commerce.
In the 1830 Anne Arundel census, Henryâ„¢s household consisted of one male between 5 and 10, 1 male between 10 and 15 (this would be John Henry Gore), two males between 15 and 20, one male 20 to 30, one male 40 to 50 (Henry Whalen); one female 30 to 40 and one female 40 to 50.
In 1840, Division 3, Anne Arundel, there was one male age 15-20, one male age 60-70 (Henry), and one female age 30-40. Living next door to Henry i was John Whalen, about his same age, who is presumably a brother. There is also a œBeal Whalen enumerated in the same Division of Anne Arundel, but it is unknown if he is related.
